Chinese airlines finally get Taiwan rights

HONG KONG: China's three largest airlines, China Southern, Air China and China Eastern, have each secured four weekly flights to Taiwan after an agreement eased restrictions on direct flights across the Taiwan Strait.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Hainan Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Xiamen Airlines will each have two weekly flights to Taiwan. More direct flights and destinations may be added depending on market demand. China Eastern Airlines says it will soon set up shop in Taiwan to help charter flight services and start looking for its first representative office in Taipei. It is also talking with Taiwan's largest carriers, China Airlines and EVA Airways, about co-operation. China Southern, the nation's largest carrier by fleet size, is set to sign a deal with China Airlines. Weekend flights are set to start next month following the lifting of restrictions imposed in 1949. China Airlines told The Hong Kong Standard it ran about 30 direct flights to the mainland on public holidays last year, as well as 16 flights across the strait during the Lunar New Year. A small number of non-stop charter flights have been allowed in recent years, but were restricted to holidays. Analysts believe Taiwanese carriers will be the big winners from the "direct flights" scheme. According to JP Morgan, 36 passenger charter flights a week will boost Chinese airlines' net profits by less than 1% and cut Cathay Pacific’s earnings by a similar degree.

Jet Asia of Macau responds to private charter demand in Asia

MACAU, April 9: Jet Asia of Macau is expanding its charter fleet this year with the addition of seven new aircraft to reflect the buoyant trend the private jet sector is experiencing in Asia. Two new Hawker Beechcraft Hawker 900XPs and four Hawker 750s are on order for delivery from December 2007 through to September this year. A Bombardier Challenger 605 comes on line in August 2009 replacing one of two earlier 601s and a Global Express 5000 will follow a year later, replacing the company’s original 601. In addition, last week it was confirmed that Jet Asia will be the first operator in Asia to fly the Project Phoenix VIP-configured Bombardier CRJ-200 on behalf of Ritz Pacific Ltd. This aircraft will join the fleet later this year. Jet Asia played a key role in helping Ritz Pacific determine a suitable business jet for its client’s needs and the Phoenix CRJ, with similar interior dimensions to the Global Express, scored highly on big cabin comfort, passenger appeal and economics. The aircraft will enter service with a brand new interior, new avionics and long range fuel tanks to give a maximum range of 3,000 nm. Longer term, Jet Asia says it plans to introduce its first executive airliner - either a Boeing 737 or MD-80 series, which would be specifically converted into 24-seat VIP layout. Long range fuel tanks would enable it to offer long haul charters from Asia to the Middle East and Europe. The company says research is under way toward approval for purchase later this year. Tourism (primarily casino activity) attracts millions of visitors from China and Hong Kong to Macau each year. By 2006 gambling revenues from the casino boom had exceeded those from Las Vegas. “Undoubtedly, this has become a key driver for Jet Asia’s growth,” says the company’s CEO Chuck Woods. “Business aviation in Asia over the past six years has been quite slow – now it is offscale high and most noteworthy is the fact that 80% of the new orders being placed for business jets are for private use, so this is beneficial to companies like ours. Private individuals depend on experienced and professional organisations who can manage their fleets.” Jet Asia was founded in 1995, originally as the corporate flight department of STDM, the Hong Kong tourism and hospitality conglomerate of tycoon Stanley Ho. The company acquired its AOC in 1997 and the fleet subsequently expanded with a second 601, two Global Express’s and one managed Embraer Legacy.

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines has unveiled a new uniform for its male cabin crew.

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines has unveiled a new uniform for its male cabin crew. From June 30, crew will wear suits created by French fashion designer Christophe Galibert, artistic Director of Balmain Uniformes. The airline says the uniform is designed to complement the well-known sarong kebaya worn by the airline’s female cabin crew. Galibert has also worked with the designer of the sarong kebaya, Pierre Balmain, for more than 25 years. Said Galibert: “In designing this new look, our main aim was to retain the legendary elegance of the Singapore Airlines male cabin crew but at the same time make it more consistent with the iconic creation of Pierre Balmain’s sarong kebaya. Our challenge was, therefore, to find a matching smartness and unique sophistication for the male crew uniform.”

The new uniform comprises a single-breasted navy blue suit (jacket and trousers), sky blue shirt and striped tie. The tie colour differentiates the four ranks of crew. It replaces a uniform designed back in 1991. Tan Pee Teck, senior VP, cabin crew, said the new uniform projects "a smart and professional image" and will instill a sense of pride in the crew. "This is even more so since many of our crew members were themselves actively involved in the selection and fine-tuning of the design concept and colour scheme of the uniform.”
